Patchning Catalyst 6807-XL

We can upgrade the standby individually directly to 15.5(1)SY12 from 15.5(1)SY1 since 6K supports RPR then we can change the boot variable on the active and do a switchover. This is an easier procedure; however, it may only work with no downtime if you have dual homed connections between both active and standby.

  1. Set the boot system to 15.5(1)SY12 on the active which will reflect on both chassis.
  2. Hit “redundancy reload peer” on the active, where the standby will be upgraded and reloaded to the new IOS.
  3. After the standby comes up, we can then hit “redundancy force-switchover” where the active will now be reloaded and upgraded however when it comes up the old standby will be active now.
  4. As discussed earlier, if you have dual homed connections, we should not see an impact as there will always be a chassis that is up.
  5. Since 6K supports RPR, then it will run with different images, however it will not be running SSO at the moment of different images.

The concept is that the switches will run RPR at the time they are running different IOS releases, ensuring continuous operation for both switches.

While SSO and RPR differ primarily in failover time and a few other aspects, the presence of dual-homed connections should mitigate any noticeable impact, as previously discussed.

The switches fall back to RPR once there is a mismatch in the IOS. To clarify, even when SSO is configured there is no need for any manual configuration change.
